What is Choice?
Miami-Dade County’s Housing and Community Development Department received a Choice Neighborhood Planning Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. The grant represents opportunity, resources, and support for community revitalization in the MLK Station Neighborhood, specifically at the sites of the former Annie Coleman 16.
This initiative will be a two-year, community-driven planning process and will engage public housing residents, neighborhood residents, local businesses and other stakeholders to create a 'transformation plan' for the community. It's important to note that this will be a plan created by the community and for the community. The transformation plan is required to focus on three core areas:
1. Housing: One-for-one replacement of distressed public housing with high-quality mixed-income housing, with a right-of-return for existing residents.
2. People: Improving opportunities for residents.
3. Neighborhood: Catalyze physical improvements in the community.
In addition, the transformation plan can address other community issues or concerns as identified by residents. The process will build on prior planning efforts, such as the Model City/Brownsville Charette completed in 2004, as well as current planning efforts.
Miami-Dade County Housing and Community Development, in coordination with our project management team, county personnel, and strategic stakeholders, will provide administrative support throughout the grant cycle.
Choice neighborhood Timeline
The planning process for the MLK Station Choice Plan will take approximately two and a half years to complete. We will gather feedback from community residents and partners to understand the area’s context. This is important to ensure the plan fits the needs of the MLK Station neighborhood, now and in the future.
